at the Goetheanum on the question of anthroposophical community building. The anthroposophical path to knowing is one we take individually. In “How to Know Higher Worlds,” Rudolf Steiner’s book on inner development, he addresses us as individuals and the exercises he describes are carried out by individuals. But striving for knowledge also brings us together because the truth unites. Rudolf Steiner spoke of a uniting ‘I’: the connecting to the other, to the You, that is intrinsic to our ‘I’-being. Our individual approach to knowing therefore points beyond its personal beginning and unites us in community. “Who walks to the truth walks alone” is Christian Morgenstern’s characterization of the individual path to knowing. However, this path leads us to other truth seekers, to “eternally united sisters and brothers,” and consequently to community building.
Rudolf Steiner envisaged different communities within the Michaelic stream. They relate to different vocational fields and therefore to professional collaboration, but also to the working of sisters and brothers in the First Class of the School of Spiritual Science and in the community-enhancing “We” of the Foundation Stone Meditation’s fourth panel.
We will celebrate the foundation, a hundred years ago, of the Esoteric Youth Circle (16 October 1922) and of the Christian Community (16 September 1922) by examining their relationship with the School of Spiritual Science.
