What do children and adolescents learn “in sleep”?

How do we work in Waldorf education with the forces of the night?

28 to 31 October 2017

Invitation

Dear Colleagues,

The international kindergarten and school physicians’ conference will take place at the Goetheanum in Dornach from 28 to 31 October 2017 to which you are very warmly invited. Since this conference is also an integral part of our modularised advanced specialist training to become a kindergarten and school physician, we particularly welcome new entrants to this specialist field, and all colleagues who are interested in subjects related to it or in child development in general, whose participation will enhance our collaboration.

Our meeting this year will focus on various facets of sleep in childhood:

What do children and adolescents learn “in sleep”?
How do we work in Waldorf education with the forces of the night

Thus our specialist lectures will start with thoughts on the activity of the human constitutional elements in sleeping and waking. This subject will be continued later in the day with the presentation: How is the sleeping-waking rhythm reflected neurophysiologically in health and illness. The next two lectures then relate to practice, discussing Sleep development and learning behaviour in the first three septenniums and Differentiation and treatment of childhood sleep disorders. A concrete case study with eurythmy therapy takes us into our everyday work as school physicians and rounds off the subject.

In working together on the first lecture from GA 218, “Experiences during sleep: their spiritual context and significance for our daily life”, our aim is to study Steiner’s statements on sleep in the original.

Before the lunch break each day there is an opportunity for us to engage in movement and together practise eurythmy therapy or Bothmer gymnastics®, or to play chamber music.

So that the correct music can be brought along for the chamber music, all those who intend to bring their instrument and want to play are warmly requested to contact Michael Knoch (knoch@fwsk.net) as early as possible beforehand – but no later than 16 October.

In the early afternoon, we will again hold our workshops which, as in previous years, will extend far beyond our immediate conference topic with a diverse and varied range of subjects.

Late Sunday afternoon will this year be devoted wholly to the subject of Meditation – on the one hand looking at its importance for our day-to-day work in the school, on the other discussing experiences with meditation in the group of school physicians in recent years. Sunday evening will then be concerned with the major subject of Inclusion – tasks of the school physician.

It is, after all, a particular feature of our profession that almost all of us as “lone fighters” at our schools and kindergartens have little opportunity for the direct exchange of views with our medical colleagues. Hence it is our particular concern that at the kindergarten and school physicians’ conference personal encounter, the exchange of views between ourselves and mutual help are given sufficient space. We intend to use the time of the two evening plenary sessions on Saturday and Monday for this purpose.

In addition, a big deepening discussion with the lecturers from the four specialist lectures is planned for the last day with the goal of consolidating the content of the lecture work in joint discussion such that it can become productive for our concrete everyday activity.

We hope very much that both experienced colleagues and those who have developed a completely new interest in the field of kindergarten and school medicine – and particularly also colleagues from the non-German speaking world – will feel that this so fundamental subject and this way of working together is something for them, so that we can come together as a large group to enhance our schools and kindergartens with new impulses.
