Nils Frischknecht is managing director of the Goetheanum Stage. He will give updates on the situation of the stage renovation at the beginning of the season.
What steps are taking place before the renovation of the Stage?
The stage needs to be operational for Eurythmy performances until the end of September. What is not needed for the performances- for example the sloping stage, aluminum mesh, platforms and backdrops- are already being removed, also from storage.
What can be reused?
Basically everything movable like dimmers, headlights, aluminum mesh, curtains, platforms and the eurythmy carpet. The noise machine for wind, thunder and rain, as well as the strike box for thunderstorms will be used again.
Can materials like Iron and Copper be sold?
We will not make a profit from materials, but we calculate however that the worth of the materials will count towards the collection fees. It will be critical to properly sort the metals.
In the cleaning process, was anything found that was lost or forgotten?
No. We always kept the stage in order, which is also recognized by colleagues who visit the stage.
Can certain parts of the technical stage- for example a wheel or rope- be bought as a souvenir?
We don’t have the impression that there is such an interest amongst members. It was different 15 years ago when we sold slates from the Goetheanum.
How has the stage changed from the cleaning?
Moving things away and cleaning up is always freeing and makes room for the new. There is also a painful side, because what was once living, becomes history and the past. In the past 90 years, hundreds of people have worked with the pulley machine, the wheels were a part of every Faust performance and the Mystery Dramas. In the sorting out, not only materials leave, but also a certain atmospheric thickness. I imagine it like a tree-being that searches for a new tree when it’s is felled: the technical beings are going away and hopefully they come back again.
Is the new parquet flooring on the Executive Council level, part of the renovation package?
What about the invisible work done?
We consult with a company that designs stages and together we select contractors. Because the control system cannot be installed just once like a beam, but also must be used and cared for by people in 15 or 20 years, we check carefully with whom it is fruitful to work with.
