A Conference of the Medical Section at the Goetheanum in collaboration
with theAssociation of Anthroposophical Physicians in Germany/GAÄD
from Saturday, 27 to Tuesday, 30 October 2018
Organiser: Medical Sektion
It was in ancient times,
That there lived in the souls of initiates
Powerfully the thought that
By nature every human being is sick.
And education was seen
As a healing process
Which, as they matured,
Gave children the health
To be complete human beings in life.
The international kindergarten and school physicians’ conference will take place once again at the Goetheanum in Dornach from 27 to 30 October 2018 to which you are very warmly invited. Since this conference is also an integral part of our modularised advanced specialist training to become a kindergarten and school physician, we particularly welcome new entrants to this specialist field as well as all colleagues who are interested in subjects related to it or also in child development in general whose participation will enhance our collaboration.
Our conference subject this year is:
Prematurely born and chronically ill children in kindergarten and school
Our specialist lectures will start with consideration of the prematurely born child. This subject will be deepened further on the same day by a presentation on foetal development and the specific problems of premature children and their families. On the next day the focus is on the major subject of allergies with the afternoon devoted to a special examination of childhood bronchial asthma. Overweight and obesity in children and young people as well as coeliac disease and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases: will concern us on the third day. A lecture about absences, tics and other forms of seizure in childhood round off this series of specialist lectures.
With regard to the way the conference is conducted this year, we consider it particularly important that, on the one hand, the individual clinical pictures are presented to us by proven experts but that, on the other hand, we take our very specific perspective, that is our tasks as school physicians, very seriously.
Instead of our joint textual work, we have therefore decided this year to supplement each specialist lecture with concrete case studies from our activity as school physicians with the question: what does a child with this specific clinical picture require from kindergarten or school and what tasks arise as a result for us as school physicians?
The intention is that briefest possible case reports from experienced school physicians appropriate for the clinical picture should introduce an intensive exchange of views in the plenary session.
For the specialist lectures we have recruited experienced paediatricians and general practitioners and as the external speaker, particularly in connection with the subject of “Overweight in children”, the certified (diploma) nutrition scientist and cook Agnes Streber, director of the “KinderLeicht” nutrition institute in Munich.
From Sunday to Tuesday, the Act of Consecration of Man forms the prelude for our morning work. Before the lunch break each day, there is an opportunity for us to engage in movement and together practise eurythmy therapy or creative speech, or to play chamber music. So that the correct music can be brought along for the chamber music, all musicians who decide in favour of chamber music are warmly requested to contact Michael Knoch (firstname.lastname@example.org) at least 14 days before the conference starts.
In the early afternoon, we will again hold our workshops which, as in previous years, will extend far beyond our immediate conference topic with a diverse and varied range of subjects.
Sunday evening will form a bridge to education in our very medically oriented conference this year with a lecture by Michaela Glöckler on “Therapy with the tools of education”.
It is a particular feature of our profession that almost all of us as “lone fighters” at our schools and kindergartens have little opportunity for the direct exchange of views with our medical colleagues. Hence it is always our particular concern that at the kindergarten and school physicians’ conference personal encounter, the exchange of views among ourselves and mutual help are given sufficient space. We intend to use the time of the two evening plenary sessions on Saturday and Monday for this purpose.
We hope very much that both experienced colleagues and those who have developed a completely new interest in the field of kindergarten and school medicine – and particularly also colleagues from the non-German speaking world – will feel that this year’s conference subject and this way of working together is something for them, so that we can come together as a large group to enhance our schools and kindergartens with new impulses.
