Goetheanum Christmas Appeal

„And the fruitful element about the thing  ( the Sense for Affirmation)  is not what you are missing, but what you have.“

Rudolf Steiner (Stages of Higher Knowledge, GA 12)

Dear Friends,

Projecting the tasks of the Goetheanum for the next three to five years clearly shows the broad scope of the necessary work to be accomplished. From the  wide-ranging activity of each Section of the School of Spiritual Science, to the professional conferences which bring spiritual content and insights to the challenges and situation of our time, to artistic renewal and research in speech, drama, eurythmy--whether in the Mystery Dramas or in major stage performances-- all of this is part of the Goetheanum and belongs to our key responsibility. Even though there is clearly more that should be done (and could be done given adequate resources), in light of the above statement, we are enormously grateful for what is made possible by the engagement and financial generosity of you, our members and friends. In times of limited resources it is necessary to practice this sense of affirmation, and focus on priorities.

There are several major undertakings planned and currently underway at the Goetheanum. These need your support and financial help. They include:

  1)  the four Mystery Dramas of Rudolf Steiner

  2)  the renovation of the Goetheanum terrace and roof

  3)  research projects and basic infrastructure support for 11 Sections of the School of Spiritual Science

  4) the implementation of an adequate software system to manage the 700 annual events and service the needs of members efficiently

  5) urgent upgrades to the sound insulation (and functionality) of several conference rooms, replacement of the elevators, better signage in and around the Goetheanum--  to optimise the experience of members and guests.

 6) expanding our offerings to students from around the world (now numbering ca. 150) who wish to study anthroposophy at the Goetheanum. This is a growing area where we wish to invest resources for the future.

This small selection of activities does not include the numerous “quieter” but also important projects. For example, the Sections have ongoing research projects, the Archives and Documentation have supervised the cleaning of the Statue and other critical preservation works. In addition, each Section of the School is active in research, coordination and representation of the work worldwide. These too need your support.

The Goetheanum has budgeted 725,000 USD (globally) this year for the Christmas Appeal. We hope very much that each of you will be inspired to make a generous donation towards these many tasks of the Goetheanum.

On behalf of the Executive Council, thank you very much for your interest and engagement.

With our best wishes for a light-filled Christmas and New Year,

Cornelius Pietzner
